Principles of good practice

Whilst working within organisational and professional codes of conduct, health informatics professionals will:

  1. Work within the law and keep up to date with changes in legislation that affect working practices.
  2. Maintain the quality of data and promote the importance of data quality to others.
  3. Work with honesty and integrity, balancing the requirements of freedom of information with data protection and confidentiality.
  4. Provide a high quality service to all individuals.
  5. Respect individual choice, wishes and preferences in actions taken, whilst balancing the wider needs of the community and society.
  6. Work in ways which are based on evidence of effectiveness.
  7. Use all forms of technology in an acceptable and ethical way.

The National Occupational Standards for Health Informatics describe work activities that are underpinned by these principles of good practice.
